Description
Join us on Wednesday, May 21st for a 1-hour program on how substance use impacts older adults. Dr. Rossana Lau-Ng, Assistant Professor of Geriatrics at BU’s Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine will share new insights on this increasing health concern for older adults and their families.
The prevalence of older adults with substance use disorder (SUD) or substance misuse is alarming. In the past two decades, drug overdose death rates among adults aged ≥ 65 years increased more than three-folds. Older adults are disproportionately affected by the increased use of high-risk substances and face substantial barriers in access to and utilization of substance use disorder services. Attendees will understand how stigma impact health outcomes for this vulnerable population. We’ll review the specific considerations for substance use in older adults, including diagnosing challenges of use disorder and treatment opportunities. We’ll also review utilizing the Geriatric 5Ms approach, and how it relates to the care of older adults with substance use.
