Shawn Parra, LSW, LCSW

Professional Summary

Shawn (they/he/el) is an Afro-Latine, Dominican, queer, child of immigrants, born in the US. They earned their MSW at Boston University School of Social Work, as well as an MA & BA in Psychology at Boston University. Their MSW major was Clinical Social Work Practice with a specialization in Trauma & Violence as well as a Macro Social Work Practice minor. Additionally, Shawn has completed a TF-CBT certification from MUSC. Shawn is now pursuing a PhD in social work at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and is licensed in Illinois as an LSW, and in RI as an LCSW.

Shawn’s goal is to utilize clinical, research, teaching, and educational experiences to help change and transform the oppressive systems themselves. Their interests include mental health and increasing access for marginalized communities. Their work and expertise focus on intersectionality and critical social work practice, qualitative and mixed methods research, queer and trans studies and practice with LGBTQ+ communities, and child and family dynamics.

Shawn has experience as an in-home therapist, high school counselor, case manager, outpatient therapist, behavioral therapist, research assistant, and instructor of record. Currently, Shawn is working as a Mental Health Clinical Practitioner collaborating with individuals who have experienced trafficking. Outside of social work, they enjoy spending time with family and friends, trying new foods, traveling, and dancing!
