CADER Team Shares Expertise at GSA 2024

Seattle, Washington

The team from the Center for Aging and Disability Education and Research (CADER) at BU School of Social Work (BUSSW) recently shared their research and expertise at the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) 2024 Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington.

In the “Charting New Territories: Exploring the Role of Micro-Credentials in Gerontology” symposium, CADER Director Bronwyn Keefe’s research highlighted the importance of micro-credentials in workforce development and how these credentials have the power to advance education in aging. Highlighting CADER’s partnerships with state teams in New York, Massachusetts, and California, Prof. Keefe explained how micro-credentials offer practitioners in the field a concise learning experience targeted at skill development, enabling them to provide better services to older adults. Prof. Keefe, BUSSW Prof. Jordana Muroff, and Megan Nizza (PhD’27) highlighted research on hoarding among older adults and the impact of training interventions in their poster session, “Building Capacity to Address Hoarding and Clutter Among Older Adults.”. The CADER team shared outcomes from five cohorts that completed CADER’s Hoarding Disorder in Older Adults online course, which trains social workers and other social service providers on interventions for hoarding disorder in older adults. The evaluation showed that upon completing the course, participants had improved knowledge and practical skills for addressing hoarding disorder.  View the poster here.

Annalee Wilson, CADER evaluation and workforce training manager, shared new research on how CADER’s Mental Health and Aging for Faith Leaders online course empowers faith leaders to recognize mental health challenges among older adults in their communities and provide better support. In a poster titled “From Knowledge to Practice: Training Faith Leaders in Aging and Mental Health,” Wilson discussed outcomes from faith leaders in Massachusetts and Chicago, Illinois who completed the course and showed significant increases in their skills levels across all 11 course competencies.  View the poster here.
