Webinar: Psychotherapy with Couples & Families — an Experiential Workshop – Oct. 31 & Nov. 1

Webinars

Description

Initially developed in the 1980’s at The Gestalt International Study Center (Wellfleet, Cape Cod), The Cape Cod Model ©, is grounded in foundational Gestalt concepts and is a distinctive approach to working with couples and families. Rather than focusing on dysfunction and failure, Gestalt in general, and this program in particular, will invite the therapist to consider that difficulties in couples and families are a function of limited range of behavior and choice. Therefore, the focus of the program is to help therapists see that “problems” in the couple or family are typically the result of over-reliance on limited competencies. The therapist’s role is to raise awareness in the couple or family in support of growth and development vs. “fixing” dysfunction.

Seeking couples/marital or family therapy is often a more complex process than initiating individual therapy. Shame or embarrassment can preclude even initiating the process, and early on the engagement can be compromised because of profound vulnerability on the part of either partner, or in the case of family therapy, on the part of parents.

This workshop will be structured so that content and theory presentations are followed by small group practice sessions in which the foundational principles are applied. In this 2-day experiential workshop, learning goals will focus on:

  • Learning to use oneself as a powerful instrument of observation, feedback, and impact.
  • Developing an approach that recognizes how people connect.
  • Developing the ability to give compelling, appreciative feedback.
  • Understanding, appreciating and articulating the competence of the client or client system
  • Developing creative approaches to helping clients expand their range of behavior

This training program is suitable for any clinician doing psychotherapy with, or planning to do psychotherapy with couples or families. This is especially for clinicians who may not have training in working with couples and families are being called upon do provide such services.
